Skyscraper construction is advancing at a dizzying pace—nearly 80 of the world’s tallest buildings have been completed in the past decade alone. These monolithic structures have come to represent the enormous strides of human development over the past century—a product of humankind’s innate desire to reach new heights, physically and metaphorically—and are the subject of a sometimes obsessive worldwide following. However, the tall building—and cities—are now starting to change in response to the considerable challenges of our time: massive population growth and rapid urbanization, unprecedented changes to the climate as a consequence of greenhouse gas emissions, and mounting social and public health issues.
